Hi guys! Hope you’re all doing well.
Today I have some mini reviews for you on 3 foundations… well, 2 foundations and a BB cream.
Go ahead and get comfy and let’s get started!
Drugstore foundations have really been upping their game in recent years. 20 years ago, there were maybe just a couple really good ones, but now? There’s lots! These are three that I had never tried before. Let’s find out what I thought!
CoverGirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation
I don’t know about any of you, but GoverGirl has never really wowed me a whole lot. I know they have some products that some people totally swear by. They’ve just never impressed me much. I remember several years ago, I got sent their original TruBlend foundation to test out before it hit the market. Unfortunately, the shade I was sent was WAY too dark, and it didn’t play well with my oily/combo skin at all. Yeah it was a bust for me.
But now they have a matte version of it. I was curious and it was only like $6 or $7, so I picked one up to try out. I got the shade L60 Light Nude, which ended up being a really good color match for me (I’m getting pretty good at just eyeballing foundations to pick the right shade). I also like it comes with a pump. I’m so glad more drugstore foundations are giving us pumps now.
This foundation gives me a nice, solid medium coverage, but it can be built up if you want more coverage. It has a matte but not flat finish, which I really like. It claims to help control oil while not looking cakey or drying and keep you matte and wear time of up to 12 hours. It also comes in 36 shades, which isn’t too bad for a drugstore brand. Inclusiveness is so important today more than ever.
As I mentioned, the shade I chose was a great color match and the coverage is pretty good too. It does help keep me matte throughout the day (I’m more on the oily side when it’s warmer and boy it is HOT here in Florida right now). Wear time? It lasts all day on me. I’ve gotten more than 12 hours wear out of it. GoverGirl finally did it. They finally came out with a product that has impressed me. This has quickly become one of my favorite drugstore foundations.
CoverGirl Clean Matte BB Cream
Me? BB cream? Who am I? Yes it’s true I finally decided to try a BB cream. I wanted something that’s just a little lighter coverage to try and decided to give this one a go.
The shade range is… ehhhh… at 9 shades. But it’s a BB cream that’s mainly supposed to just even everything out a bit, so some shades can work with multiple skin tones. I costs around $6-$8 depending on where you buy it. It also claims to keep you shine free all day.
I initially got the shade Light. It was…. not light. It actually looked more “medium”. It worked, but just barely. I ended up returning it and got the shade Fair, which actually looks more like a “light” shade. It’s a bit on the warm side, so if you have a super cool undertone, it might look super yellow on you. But I’m cool leaning neutral, so I can get away with this one pretty well.
Coverage wise, this is basically like a foundation. I can get a light medium coverage from it. It does a good job evening out my skin and lightly covering any imperfections or redness. It can be built up a little bit, but too much and or it starts to look a little cakey. But otherwise, it’s perfect for those days I want some coverage but not a lot.
But how does it wear? Surprisingly well. My home theme park, Busch Gardens Tampa, reopened almost 3 weeks ago. I’m an annual passholder, so I’ve been back a couple times since reopening. I wore this BB cream both times I’ve visited the park, and it held up really well in the heat and humidity… plus wearing a face covering! Only a tiny bit rubbed off the end of my nose. That’s impressive.
Ok CoverGirl… I see you now. That’s TWO products you’ve wowed me with. What’s going on here? Not complaining though.
Almay Skin Perfecting Comfort Matte Foundation
I picked this up on a whim at Walgreens as I had some rewards to blow and wanted to treat myself to something new. Almay isn’t a brand I usually gravitate toward, but this foundation suddenly caught my eye and I decided to give it a go.
This foundation is the most expensive of the 3 here today. It retails between $9.99 to $13.99 depending on where you buy it. It claims to even out your skin tone, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and blurs the look of imperfections. “A lightweight matte foundation that feels incredibly comfortable on your skin- and wears for up to 16 hours.”
I got shade 130 Cool Nude (there are 16 shades total, which needs serious work as there’s only like 3-4 deeper shades, which is really disappointing). Anyhow, the shade I chose again ended up being a really good color match for me. Unfortunately, it does not come with a pump. Almay, you need to fix this.
Again like the CoverGirl TruBlend, this foundation gives me a nice, solid medium coverage. I’ve been liking more medium coverage foundations these days. I still like full coverage foundations for special occasions like a night out or whatever, but since there’s not going to be any real special night outs for awhile (thanks pandemic), for everyday I prefer something a little lighter.
Anyhow, since this foundation gives a medium coverage, it lives up to the claim of evening my skin tone. As for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles? Ummm…. kinda. I’m in my 40s and I’m not happy about having some lines and wrinkles, but again… I’m in my 40s so it is what it is, you know? But it does live up to its claim of blurring imperfections as it has that nice medium coverage. As for the promised up to 16 hour wear time? It ticks that box with no issue. It holds up really well all day with very minimal touchup needed (if at all). It has a natural matte finish that doesn’t look heavy or cakey, which I like.
This is another that has quickly become a favorite and I’m so glad I decided to give it a try.
So that’s it! All three foundations have been winners (despite the original shade snafu with the BB cream)! I love when that happens.
Have you tried any of these? What did you think? Tell me your thoughts below in the comments.
As always, thank you all so much for reading. I’ll see you again soon in my next post!
