My Favorite Beauty Discoveries of 2017

Hey guys! How’s it going? I hope you had a good Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa… or whatever you celebrate!

I had a good Christmas. It was pretty low key really. My boyfriend and I went to my dad’s house for dinner and we did presents and stuff.

Anyhow, I’m finally back with a new post for you! I thought I’d share with you my favorite beauty products I discovered over the last year. Not all of these are products that came out this year… they were new to me though.

So are you ready? Ok let’s get going! Buckle up… this might be a long one.

I’m going to try breaking this down by category.

Skincare

Yes To Tomatoes Clear Skin Detoxifying Charcoal Facial Wipes

If you’ve been following my blog here for awhile, you’ll know how I love the Epielle Green Tea face wipes. I’ve gone through countless packs of them. But this year I wanted to try some other brands, and picked up a pack of these Yes to Tomatoes ones on a whim one day as they sounded interesting. I ended up loving them. They’re black, which was slightly surprising, but really shouldn’t have because… charcoal. But they do a great job removing my makeup and other gunk off my face at the end of the day. They don’t break me out and the scent isn’t horrible either. These are great if you have oily, combo or acne prone skin. I just finished off a 2nd pack of these and plan on getting more soon.

Belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb

I kept hearing about this moisturizer and how amazing it is if you have oily or combo skin. So I eventually got a sample of it at Sephora one day. Got a handful of uses out of it and ended up loving it so much I got another sample of it at Sephora. It’s spendy (a full size is $38), but the hype about this moisturizer is real. It has a gel consistency, so it absorbs quick into the skin and is lightweight. It makes your skin feel hydrated but doesn’t make it look or feel like a greaseball. I finally got a full size when Sephora sent the $20 off $50 coupon to VIB rewards members earlier this month.

Haircare

Hask Kalahari Melon & Monoi Coconut Dry Shampoos

These were an unexpected surprise. I got a travel size of the coconut one as a GWP at Ulta when I was restocking on my Hask Kalahari Melon shampoo & conditioner. It smells really good and does a pretty good job absorbing oil at my roots. Then I ran across the Kalahari Melon version on clearance at Walgreens for $2.99 and couldn’t pass it up as I’ve tried every other product in that line and have absolutely loved it. And this is no exception. This works just as well as the coconut version and also smells awesome (to me at least). These do leave a little bit of a white cast, but it goes away when you work the product into your hair with your fingers and/or a brush.

Tools

Bdellium Tools Brushes

I’d heard about this brand but never got a chance to try them until this year when I picked up a few eye brushes at The Makeup Show Orlando. These brushes are so good! They do a great job applying/blending out shadows. They’re not super expensive either (most of the eye brushes are no more than $7 and they have sales on their site often). I definitely plan on picking up more from them as soon as I have a chance.

L’Oreal Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender & Danielle Creations Flawless Blending Sponge

L-R: Danielle Creations sponge, L’Oreal sponge

I’m always looking for inexpensive dupes for the Beauty Blender, and these are my favorite two I discovered this year. The pink L’Oreal sponge is probably the closest dupe I’ve found. It’s super soft, feels just like that other, more expensive sponge and works exactly the same. It blends out foundation and concealer flawlessly and doesn’t absorb too much product either. I’ve heard they changed this sponge, so I need to get another to try to find out for myself.

And the Danielle Creations sponge… same story. I picked it up on a whim at Nordstrom Rack for like $2.99 and ended up loving it. I loved it so much I went back and got another.

Makeup

Wet N Wild PhotoFocus Foundation

I got a bottle of this at the very end of 2016 (we’re talking December 31st). This foundation was a pleasant surprise as I haven’t had good luck with their foundations in the past. It has great coverage and plays really well with my combo skin. You can read my full review here.

ColourPop Pressed Powder Shadows

I was already a big fan of ColourPop when they launched these pressed powder shadows. So many colors and finishes to choose from. They have amazing pigmentation, apply & blend beautifully and last all day. I only have 5 of them so far but I want to get more at some point. You can read my full review and see swatches here.

42 Dubonnet

This is a brand new indie brand that launched just this year. I discovered them at The Makeup Show Orlando as their mascara was part of the press goodie bag I received. But I also stopped by their booth and met the creators of the brand, Ann & Lauren (a mother-daughter team). They ended up sending me some more goodies PR and I loved it all. Their matte lipstick is one of the most comfortable formulas I’ve ever tried. You can read more about them here and here.

Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow

2017 was the year of glitter. And these shadows totally capitalize on that. But they’re surprisingly easy to work with… though using a glitter glue is essential to help minimize fallout. I only own one of these, but I’ve been super impressed with it. You can read my full review here.

Demure Cosmetics Mineral Eye Color in Spring Fever

Left:, On it’s own (Can’t really see the swatch); Right, over a black base

Demure Cosmetics is another indie brand I discovered this year and also found out their HQ is in my town… and just a few miles from where I live! I had won a liquid lipstick from them on Instagram and since I’m local, I was able to pick my prize up in person. I also got one of their loose mineral eyeshadows in the shade Spring Fever and fell totally in love with it. It’s a really unique shade as it looks very subtle… a soft gold with a hint of green duochrome shift when worn over a normal eye primer or flesh-tone base. But when applied over a black base… WOW! This shadow has a dual personality! It looks like a totally different shadow as the dark base makes the green shift steal the show. It’s absolutely gorgeous no matter which way you wear it.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette

I know… “This came out in 2016, not 2017!”. True. But I didn’t get it until 2017. I actually had no interest in this palette when it was first launched. I even anti-hauled it toward the beginning of this year! The colors didn’t appeal to me. I actually had my eye on the Subculture palette, but then I saw all the bad reviews it was getting. But I wanted to see it in person and swatch it to make my own decision. Well… seeing it in-store and swatching it left me underwhelmed and unimpressed. I realized I had similar shades of most of the colors already. But I had a gift card from my birthday burning a hole in my pocket, and the Modern Renaissance palette somehow caught my eye, so I decided to get that. And I’m glad I did. I ended up absolutely loving this palette. You can see my full review here.

And that does it! What were some of your favorite beauty discoveries of 2017? Tell me about them below in the comments.

As always, thank you all so much for reading and your support! You guys are what keep me going. I hope you all have a Happy New Year and I got lots more to come here on The Makeup Case in 2018!

  1. I love reading these lists! This is how I create new shopping ideas… I guess I’ll have to give the L’Oreal sponge a try! Do you use it wet? I remember you telling me that they advised to use it dry.
And yay to Bdellium Tools brushes! 😀
    Happy New Year Amy!

  2. I love these posts! I’m glad to hear you like the charcoal tomato wipes, I got a mini pack of them in an advent calendar which I’m yet to try yet. The cucumber ones really irritated my skin so I’m hoping it’s not a problem I have with the whole line!
I need to get my hands on some bdellium brushes, everyone talks about how good they are, I wish they were a bit easier to find here!

    • I was surprised how much I like those wipes. I tried the Neutrogena pink grapefruit ones and HATED them. They stunk so bad and the smell just lingered. Ugh. I hate the smell of raw tomato but the scent on these aren’t overpowering. There is a scent but I don’t hate it. And it doesn’t linger.
