Review: L’Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base

Hi everyone! Hope you had a good weekend!

Today I got a review for you guys on the L’Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base primer. So grab that extra large beverage and tasty treat of your choice and let’s get right to it!

I’ve seen this product for awhile, but didn’t purchase it until one of my local Dollar Tree locations got a bunch of the little mini size jars in stock a couple months ago. For $1 I figured I’d finally give it a try and if I didn’t like it, I’d only be out a dollar. This product comes in both the mini size (which contains 0.17 oz of product – about 3 weeks worth according to the packaging) for around $5.99 and a full size jar (which contains 0.50 oz of product) for $8.59 to $12.99 depending on where you purchase it.

Here’s a product description (taken from Ulta’s website):

Get the perfect skin texture, instantly and all day. The silky, lightweight formula glides onto skin and minimizes the look of pores and fine lines. Skin looks and feels smoothed and resurfaced. The result is a unified matte finish that’s flawless. Suitable for all skin types. Dermatologist tested. Non-comedogenic.

Ok so let’s start with the packaging. Both sizes come in a nice, heavy, glass jar, which makes it look and feel like a more high end product. The product itself is a pale pink color, but it’s pretty much colorless once you apply it and let it set into your skin. The texture is thick and creamy. It actually reminds me a lot of the Smashbox Pore Minimizing primer (which I’m a huge fan of but hate how expensive it is).

So the best way to apply a product like this to achieve the best results is get a little on both your middle fingers then gently press/tap it into your skin instead of rubbing/spreading it around like you normally do with most primers. Some have complained this product leaves a chalky or powdery residue but if you apply it correctly…. I don’t get that result at all.

The first time I applied this primer…. OMG! I was totally blown away. It filled in my pores so well and gave me the perfect matte base for applying my foundation over. I usually just apply this to my nose area, chin and middle of my forehead as they’re the oiliest parts of my face, then I use one of my other primers on my cheeks and the sides of my forehead where I didn’t put this product (though sometimes I’ll apply it to my whole face). A little also goes a looong way. My skin feels really smooth (like when I’ve used the Smashbox Pore Minimizing primer) after applying. After letting it set for a few minutes (I do my brows while that’s going on), my foundation applies over this primer so well. I’ve tried both liquid and powder foundations with this primer and both work really well with it.

So this Magic Perfecting Base? Yeah for me it’s like, well… magic! This sucker is a total game-changer for me. I’d actually consider this a dupe for the Smashbox version and it costs so much less! I loved this little jar I picked up at Dollar Tree so much, I went back and bought 4 or 5 more little jars! Once those all run out, you bet I’ll be purchasing a full size jar. If you’re looking for a good pore-minimizing primer that won’t break the bank, definitely check this one out.

Ok that should do it for today! Have you tried this primer? Do you like it? Tell me about your experience below in the comments.

As always, I just want to say thank you all so much for reading! I hope the rest of your day is fantabulous and I’ll see you again Wednesday with a new post! 🙂
